Councillors’ charity challenge

Feb 3 2010

Two Stafford councillors are taking a well deserved rest after completing a three-day 3,700 mile sponsored swim, cycle and run, in a bid to raise funds for a Memorial of Modern Warfare for the town.

Borough and county councillors John Francis and Ivan Jennings undertook the challenge - equivalent to the distance from Stafford to Camp Bastien in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Cllr Jennings said: “It has been a hard slog, but we’ve had a great deal of support from the public.

“We wanted to do something that was both a real challenge and also related to our strong military traditions in Stafford, which we think Stafford2Afghanistan did.”

The challenge was largely undertaken at Stafford Leisure Centre, but the final few hours were completed in Stafford’s Market Square.

More events are planned, with the hope the memorial can be unveiled later in the year.

For more information, including how to donate to the memorial fund, call John Francis on 07800881957 or Ivan Jennings on 07800881875.
